Is Laser Hair Removal Worth It?
Let’s talk about it. Laser hair removal. I’ve gotten a plethora of questions about whether or not I’ve tried laser hair removal. Followed by, “Does it hurt?” and “Does it actually work?” Now, keep in mind everyone’s experience will vary, and this post will be based off my own treatments. So let’s get to it.
Yes, I have had laser hair removal treatments on 3 body parts; Brazilian, underarms, and face. Does it hurt? In my opinion…hell, yes. I have mentioned in prior posts that my pain tolerance is very low, so the pain level (for me) is pretty high, regardless of the area being treated. I used a numbing cream (recommended to me) for all of my treatments and I’ll talk about that a little later.
Now what does it feel like? Well, even though I was numbed, I could still feel the sensation in certain areas. It feels like a snapping rubber band with some heat added to it. Sometimes it would feel a hot needle piercing my skin for a quick second. But in my opinion, it was the longest second of my life. Props to those that can tolerate it without numbing. I don’t know how it’s possible! If you know your pain tolerance is low, inquire about numbing cream with your specialist.
Brazilian
I’ve had 5 treatments on my Brazilian and I have significantly less hair as the treatments have progressed (like…almost nothing). When I say Brazilian, I don’t mean bikini. I’ve treated every little nook and cranny down there and let me tell you… it is LIFE changing. For those of you who don’t want all the hair removed, that is do-able! You can choose to leave a little hair up top like a landing strip or a martini glass (triangle) shape all while being nice and clean underneath (yes even your butt). Talk to your specialist about the different options available to you.
I am probably due for a little touch up appointment because I can see one or two hairs trying to sprout, but overall my results have been drastic. The amount of treatments will vary per person and this will be determined by your specialist.
Remember: There’s no need to feel uncomfortable about bearing it all with your laser tech. Speaking as a professional, this is our JOB. I provide waxing services for my clients on a very regular basis and whether I’m doing an eyebrow wax or a Brazilian wax, it is all the same to (us) the professional. This is what we DO! We are all women, and we all want the same thing; to be groomed to perfection! Am I right? One more tip: The more comfortable you are at your treatment, the better your results will be. Trust your specialist and just breathe!
Underarms
Similar to my Brazilian, I’ve had 5 treatments on my underarms and they are as smooth as a baby’s butt! I am SO glad I treated this area because there’s nothing worse than trying to grow out your hair to be waxed (especially in the summer), or the shadow, irritation, and tiny ingrown hair(s) from shaving.
I cannot put enough emphasis on how much I love have smooth underarms 24/7. It may sound silly, but it has made my life so much easier. I truthfully could not have had better results and now I am worry-free! It is SO worth the investment (and pain)!
Face
Let me explain this one. When I say “face” I don’t mean my entire face. I mean that fuzzy side burn hair that creates a shadow when I apply makeup. Some people have absolutely no facial hair and I am forever envious. I, on the other hand, have to pay for that silky smoothness.
This is a newer area of treatment for me and to be honest, I was a little nervous treating it because like anything, there are side effects; like scarring (eeeeek). However, I truly trust my specialist and the knowledge that comes with many years of experience. This is why we pay the big bucks to people who know what they’re doing!
I’ve only had 3 treatments on my face and the amount of hair has reduced a ton! My skin is smoother, softer, and makeup glides on like melted butter- oh, baby!
Regardless of the area being treated, I was advised to use numbing cream (because I’m weak, remember?) In Canada, numbing cream is available at drugstores without needing a prescription. Simply ask the pharmacist and they will show you the different size options. I always get the larger tube because I know I’m going to use it all eventually. I’m not too sure about purchasing numbing cream in the U.S. So be sure to consult with a laser hair removal specialist and they can offer you guidance about pain management. Once obtaining your numbing cream, be sure to follow the instructions your specialist as laid out for you regarding application and processing time. This will ensure your appointment can be as comfortable as possible.
At the end of the day, laser hair removal is painful, and yes it’s expensive, but it’s an investment for long term results. My treated areas have never looked better or have felt more smooth. I am obsessed with laser hair removal and I’d love to carry on to do larger areas like arms, legs, and who knows what else. I’ll just keep going until I only have eyebrows and the hair on my head left =)!
I know this post is already lengthy, so if you have any specific questions, leave them below and I’ll answer them to the best of my knowledge! Or send me an e-mail to chia@justpeachy.co to maintain confidentiality. I’d love to hear from you!

Odd..I was staring at my underaems today thinking-“didn’t I JUST shave you??..Maybe I should get laser removal.” If its anything like getting a tattoo…I think as you said, it depends on the area, I would be able to tolerate it.
chia
LOL. That stupid underarm hair just won’t go away!! I have no idea how the pain would relate to how a tattoo feels, but I feel like if you can endure that, you can handle laser. I mean…I’m all about the numbing cream soo…that helps…ALOT!
Thanks for reading Paige!

Ugh I want to get laser hair removal for my underarms so bad! How far apart were your sessions for that?
chia
Hi!
The underarms are one of my favorite lasered areas! I never have to worry about hair- it’s GREAT! My treatments were roughly 6-8 weeks apart. This may vary per person!
Xo,
Chia
Laura
Is there anything you would compare the experiences to? I’ve done brazilian waxes before.. and I epilate the underarms!
And what are the logistics like? Like the time frame between sessions and price ranges that are worth it?
chia
Hello!
This is such a tough thing to compare because it’s such a different feeling than waxing (which I’ve done) or any other type of hair removal. As I said in the post, it feels like a hot needle or a hot (snapping) rubber band. I don’t have a tattoo, so I can’t compare it to that. All I know is that it hurts (me) lol.
Treatments and prices will vary per person. My appointments were roughly 6-8 weeks apart and I paid $130-$140/treatment. Different companies may have different prices and may also offer packages, in which you can save some money. Either way, you should be prepared to make the investment if you’re serious about it and also stay consistent.
I hope this helped Laura!

rose
chia, did you pay $130/$140 for Brazilian, underarms, and sideburns or just Brazilian?
chia
Hi!
This amount would be per treatment. Of course prices will vary depending on location!

Olga
Oh thank you for this post, I was really considering doing this and I convinced me even more! I was wondering however if they were some particular precautions to take from brown girls (i’m the same skin color as you). But since you didn’t talk about it I guess it’s not a big issue.
Love from Paris

Hi Olga!
Thank you for your message. I’m so glad I was able to help you form your decision about laser. I’ve had nothing but great experiences and I had to share it you! Of course there will always be risks of scarring or other unwanted issues with laser hair removal. This is why you should do your research and find a laser tech that is highly experienced. There are certain machines and lasers that can cater better to our skin tone and you can find this out through a consultation.
Call around the Paris (jealous!) area and get the answers you need!
Good luck,
Chia
Michelle
I heard there are different types of lasers which work best on different people….. depending on the skin color and hair type. What kind of laser did the technician use on you?
chia
Hi Michelle!
Yes, from what I’ve been told from professionals, there are different types of machines and lasers that can cater to different skin types/tones. However, this is a very technical question and I don’t have the exact answer for you. I can certainly find out and get back to you. Don’t hesitate to book a consultation and ask all the questions you need answered before proceeding with your treatment!

How much was the treatment for your underarms? I’ve been on the fence about it for a while now but your post made me want to get it done for sure! I just want an idea of how much i’m gonna be spending (I know it’s gonna be expensive LOL)
chia
Hi!
I paid $130-$150 dollars/treatment. The amount may vary depending on location and of course by how many treatments you need. I’m glad your taking the steps towards having beautiful and smooooooth skin! It’s seriously the best!!
Good luck!

How did you prepare for your appointment before the numbing cream? I usually pluck my underarms instead of shave. Does it have to be completely shaved off/hairless before you come in? I have a couple of ingrown hairs, so I’m not sure if that’s acceptable. I have fairly sensitive skin so I’ve been nervous about doing it. 😬
chia
Hello!
I will shave the area completely smooth the night before and apply my numbing cream before my appointment the next day. The area should totally free of hair before your appointment- yes. Try to get those silly little ingrowns out before your appointment by exfoliating a few days prior to your appointment. I normally exfoliate my skin every day anyways with a loofa. Focus on exfoliating the area(s) where you are prone to ingrown hairs =)!
If you are concerned about your skin type and the reaction it may have with the laser, be sure to book a consultation and speak to a professional for their recommendation! Also inquire about the recommended amount of time you should leave your numbing cream on for before your appointment. Different brands may require different processing times.

I’ve heard of a lot of horror stories from African Americans and darker complextions in general getting burned from laser. What do you reccommend?
chia
Hello, thank you for your question! Are you wondering whether or not darker complexions should get lasered? From what I’ve been told by professionals, there are different machines that work better for darker skin types/tones. With saying that, darker skin is known to have a higher risk of scarring. Check out Laser Away for more information and you can even request a consultation!
Lise
Hi Chia, I want to get this done so badly! Thanks for making this post 🙂 Also I read your answer for another comment and I was curious, would you say that you don’t really need exfoliators (like scrubs) if you use a loofa to exfoliate your body?
Did you get your laser hair removal done in Toronto? Or would you be able give me a recommendation for places in Toronto?
chia
Hello!
Thank you for your message =)! Well, you can exfoliate with a loofa or a scrub! I’ve used both! As long as you exfoliate one way or another, at least you are taking steps to remove dead skin. I haven’t been treated in Toronto, and sadly I don’t have a recommendation for the Toronto area. Wahh! Ask around, and so some research =)!
Tally
Hey Chia, how long does the effects of laser hair removal lasts normally? I was thinking about it for my face. I need to do some research first though.
chia
Hello!
The amount of treatments you need will be determined by your specialist. You should consult with a professional for specific treatments for you. Different areas will respond differently, but the idea is that you want that hair to be gone forever!! Or at least significantly reduced!
Jen
Hi, does it help with lightening the skin? My underarm became dark after many usage of shaving and waxing.
chia
Hello!
Thank you for your e-mail. I personally haven’t noticed a difference in terms of skin color. From what I understand about laser, it targets the hair and not so much pigment of the skin. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any remedies to help with lightening of the (underarm) skin. Sorry I couldn’t be more help!

Lisa
Hi Chia,
What does your exfoliation process look like? I’m suffering from ingrowns… I hate them and no matter what I do, I always have them… especially after a Brazilian wax.
Thanks!
chia
Hello!
Thank you for your message =)! I used to just use a loofah everyday with just regular soap on it- that’s all! Scrub a dub-dub girl, now you’re exfoliated! This seemed to help dramatically for me and I did pop them, I would dab a little rubbing alcohol on the area to prevent infection. Ingrowns are such a pain because they can become more frequent as you get more Brazilians. When I found myself constantly battling ingrowns, I finally just got laser hair removal- which I’ve also done a post on. If you’re sick and tired of dealing with it (like I was), I would recommend looking into laser hair removal =)!

I want laser hair removal so bad! I want to do my face first but I don’t know where to start looking. When you found your tech was it through word of mouth or the internet? I’m curious if I should ask my dermatologist to recommend me somewhere.
chia
Hello!
Thank you for your message. My laser tech specialist was actually a client of mine. I started doing her nail services and we developed a great relationship. Aside from that, I would have learned about her through word of mouth. She is highly recommended in my city! I would definitely ask your dermatologist and if you are doing your own research, always ask for a consultation to ensure your needs can be met!
Good luck!

I’m my experience laser hair removal is totally worth it! That’s perhaps the one investment I will never regret. The place I went to used lasers from http://www.cutera.com and to be honest they were painless, effective, and brightening. My skin never looked better, my legs were never as smooth, and I got laser hair removal virtually done everywhere. I wish I could get my eyebrows done with laser hair removal!
chia
Hi there!
Oh wow, painless?!?! This sounds like a dream! I am such a wimp tho…everything hurts me even when they say it’s painless haha! How amazing would it be for the brows, that would be incredible.
-Chia
Geraldine
At least for me it was truly painless! maybe a pinch here and there, but nothing major.

Such a refreshing change for me to read an extensive blog on laser hair removal and not just typical fluff. You’ve pretty much covered everything accurately, but I must add that the results of laser hair removal also vary depending on skin types – so it is advisable to check that out with your doctor / technician well in advance.
