DIY: Scalp Oil
One of my favorite steps in my hair care routine is oiling my scalp. Aside from the obvious fact that it’s nourishing, I will find every reason to use peppermint oil on my head for the tingly sensation. It’s so soothing and relaxing to me. I used to spend so much money on scalp oils, but found myself burning through a bottle in no time. Instead, I now make my own mixture using oils I already have at home.
After mixing and matching different carrier and essential oils, here is my go to mixture:
Carrier Oil
1.o oz/ 45ml Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Jojoba Oil
Essential Oils
10 drops Rosemary Oil
10 drops Peppermint Oil
There are several carrier oils available, all with different thicknesses and benefits. Here are a few you could research if you’re looking to create a mixture for yourself.
Carrier Oils:
Argan Oil
Grapeseed Oil
Coconut Oil
Almond Oil
Jamaican Black Castor Oil
Avocado Oil
There are also many essential oils with different benefits and scents that you can add to customize your scalp oil. Here are a few:
Essential Oils:
Peppermint Oil
Rosemary Oil
Lavender Oil
Clary Sage Oil
Sandalwood Oil
Geranium Oil
Chamomile Oil
Thyme Oil
Tea Tree Oil
By making my own scalp oil, I save a lot of money and have the freedom to switch up the mixture every other week if I wanted to. Check out your local health food store or Amazon to shop products and prices. Always check ingredients before purchasing. You’ll want to make sure the product is pure and not using other ingredients as fillers.
HOT TIP: If you’ve purchased scalp oil in the past, always save the glass bottle with the dropper. Especially if it comes in an amber colored glass bottle. The darker bottles are ideal to protect the pure ingredients inside. These can also be purchased if you don’t have any laying around at home.
I usually apply oil to my scalp 2-3 times a week and really massage it in for maximum benefits. I find this routine to be so relaxing, soothing, and obviously beneficial. Another HOT TIP: I like to oil my scalp if I have an intense headache or migraine. The cooling menthol sensation from the peppermint oil really helps alleviate the pain.
As always, leave your comments or questions below!

hey chia. so the measurements are the same with all the essential oils ?
chia
Hi Nolee,
Thank you for your comment! The measurement listed is what works best for me. I’ve done lots of trial bottles where I use more or less drops of oils. I find that 10 drops of each is the sweet spot (for me). As mentioned, use your own judgement when mixing your own. Take into account everyone has different sensitivities so 10 drops of peppermint may be too much for some. Especially because the menthol delivers a tingling sensation.
It may take one or two tries to find your own perfect blend! I hope this helps.

Maria
Will this be super helpful with dandruff? I have tried acv rinses and that works great for the day but it doesn’t slow it down.
chia
Hi Maria,
I would imagine it to be helpful. I can’t say for certain as I don’t have a personal experience with this. If you try it out, keep me posted on your results!

You just rub it in and don’t wash it out? It doesn’t get all over your pillow?
chia
Hi there,
If I’m doing a heavier treatment, I can wash that out. But for the most part I oil my scalp regularly and rub it in real good! If you’re concerned about your pillow you can always lay a towel down to protect your pillow.
Hope this helps.

Hi Chia,
11 years ago i had long thick hair all the way down my back. Now, I have have lost a lot of my hair and it seems to keep getting thinner. Will these oils make my hair grow? Is there anything you recommend?
chia
Hi there,
I am sorry to hear this, but there are many factors that can contribute to hair loss. It’s best to consult with a trusted professional to help you answer this question.
Wishing you the best,
Chia

Hi Chia!!! Is do Terra the brand of essential oil that you recommend? Or are there others?
chia
Hi there!
Doterra was the first brand that I started purchasing essential oils from. They are CPTG (Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade) and have much more information on their site if you’re interested in learning some more about them! I’m sure there are other great oils out there, but be sure to read the ingredients to ensure the quality of the product.
Thanks for reading =)!
